Capturing the public’s attention and earning trust are ambitious, often elusive, goals. Our students gain first-hand insights on how to meet these challenges from a diverse field of leading PR practitioners. They learn the latest skills, big-picture strategic thinking, and real-world approaches in media relations, crisis management, international PR, and public affairs. Our professors are world-renowned experts with experience in everything from Fortune 500 companies and non-profits to the highest reaches of journalism and government.

GW's Master's in Strategic Public Relations

The GW Master's Degree in Strategic Public Relations follows an innovative approach to building professional credentials that will position you to excel in this challenging profession. You’ll master core public relations skills and the practical application of strategic thinking.

You want to capture public attention, shape key policy debates, and earn the public trust as a successful strategic public relations professional. Yet you know the field is changing - you need to employ more than traditional methods in the new-media world. Online communication, viral marketing, and wireless technology have forever changed how information is shared. Leading PR practitioners must often fulfill public affairs and marketing roles in addition to traditional communications functions.

GW will deliver a comprehensive strategic public relations education that reflects this new reality. We bring real-world communication scenarios into the classroom so our students can develop a usable portfolio and master the skills needed to become a leading PR professional.

While the program takes advantage of GW’s connections in the Nation’s Capital, providing our students with an understanding of how politics and government impacts business, technology and communications, the program is not solely focused on preparing our students for careers in politics. Many of our students work at major PR firms or in communications roles with non-profits and corporations, and yes, some work on Capitol Hill or in the Executive Branch. This makes for an exciting mix which our students take advantage of and love, regardless of their career focus.
