Master of Arts in Public Relations
MA in PR Equals Three Years of Experience The Commission on Public Relations Education (CPRE) states that a master’s degree in public relations is the equivalent of three years of professional experience.
Ball State has the nation's first and only graduate program in public relations certified by the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA).
What does that mean for you? Whether you're a new graduate or a midcareer professional, you want to be successful.
As a student in our award-winning program, you'll master strategic communications and planning and management skills to prepare you for a career as a public relations executive or consultant. With our accomplished faculty, strong professional industry contacts, and a distinguished alumni network, we will position you for success.
Three Ways to Study Public Relations
Please view our main campus sample course schedule for more information on what classes you will take.
If you complete your degree on campus, you will have access to state-of-the-art facilities, including the Department of Journalism's new Holden Strategic Communications Center, Integrated Media Lab, and Unified Media Lab.
Student Media and Preprofessional Organizations
You will also have the opportunity to participate in student media and client service organizations, including:
You may also be able to work as a graduate assistant, which provides a tuition waiver, an opportunity for an academic-year stipend, and excellent experience in working with departmental faculty and staff.
When you enroll in the online MA in public relations program, you will receive the same high-quality instruction from the same distinguished faculty as students in the certified on-campus or blended programs.
Our online students have ongoing interaction with their instructors and classmates via e-mail, discussion boards, file sharing, online chats, web page posting, and other communications. These courses are typically taught asynchronously—meaning you can log on for class participation whenever you wish. We also offer the program in an accelerated format. Learn more about the online program details and courses you can take.
3. Blended (Online/On-Campus)
If you are a graduate assistant or live within commuting distance of our main campus in Muncie, Indiana, the blended method gives you the best of the online and on-campus worlds. You will have the opportunity to take some classes online and some classes on the beautiful Ball State campus. You will enjoy the convenience of online instruction combined with face-to-face interaction with faculty and students. Learn more about the blended program details and courses you can take.
Students from Other States
If you live in a state other than Indiana, this information regarding state regulatory authorizations for distance programs might impact whether you can take courses from Ball State.
Certificate in PR: An Alternative to the MA
Maybe you're not quite ready to commit to a master's degree. If not, consider either of our 15-credit hour certificates in corporate communications or education communications. A graduate certificate takes less time to complete, and four of five courses can be applied toward a master's degree.
